What Is AEO and GEO? A Plain-English Guide for Small Businesses

Here’s the thing. Google isn’t the only search anymore..

Hi friend,

What is AEO and GEO? Let’s start with how people search. People ask ChatGPT to recommend a web designer. They ask Claude to compare two therapists in their area. They ask Perplexity to explain the difference between two service packages before they ever open a Google tab. If your website only shows up in traditional search results, you’re missing half the conversations happening about businesses like yours.

That’s where AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) come in. Two acronyms getting thrown around a lot right now, most of it either overhyped or never actually explained in plain language. So let’s fix that.

What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It’s the practice of structuring your website so AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity can read it, understand it, and use it to answer someone’s question.

Traditional SEO gets you ranked in a list of blue links. AEO gets you cited as the answer itself. When someone asks an AI “who’s a good web designer for wellness businesses,” AEO is what determines whether your name comes up, or whether the AI has never heard of you.

It works less like a popularity contest and more like a comprehension test. The AI needs to understand what you do, who you do it for, and why it’s worth mentioning. If your site is vague, or your services page is one long paragraph of adjectives, there’s nothing there for it to pull from.

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization, and it’s AEO’s close cousin. The two get used interchangeably more often than they should. The real difference: AEO is about whether AI can find and use your content at all. GEO is about how you’re described once it does, the actual sentences a generated answer writes about your business.

Think of it this way: AEO gets you in the room. GEO decides what gets said about you once you’re there. Both fall under the umbrella of what’s often just called SEO for AI search.

Why AEO/GEO matters for a service business right now

People are already doing this. Not in some future version of the internet, right now, today, while you’re reading this post. Someone searching for a therapist, a designer, a coach, or a consultant is increasingly likely to start that search inside an AI chat instead of a Google tab.

And here’s the part that actually matters for you: almost none of your competitors are optimizing for this yet. The businesses who get their site structured well now are the ones who get cited for the next few years, before everyone else catches on and the competition catches up.

What actually changes on your website

This isn’t a full rebuild. It’s a handful of specific, doable shifts:

  1. Structured pages with real headers. Headers that describe what’s actually in each section, not clever wordplay. AI, and humans, honestly, navigate structure faster than style.
  2. Clear, direct language. AI tools pull from sentences that state facts plainly. “I build brand and web systems for wellness providers” gets used. “Elevating your digital presence through holistic design solutions” does not.
  3. Real answers to real questions. An FAQ section that actually answers what people ask (how much does this cost, how long does it take, what’s included) gives AI something concrete to quote.
  4. Consistent information everywhere. Your site, your Google Business profile, and your social bios should all describe your business the same way. AI cross-references. Contradictions make it cautious about citing you at all.

What this does NOT mean

The new PvE Design site does what a multi-stream creative brand’s site should do: it lets each offering shine It doesn’t mean throwing out good SEO. AEO and GEO build on the same foundation: real content, real clarity, real structure. If your site’s already doing that work for Google, you’re most of the way there.

And it doesn’t mean panicking or ripping your whole site apart this week. Treat this like any other part of your systems: something you build in deliberately, a little at a time, instead of ignoring until it’s a much bigger problem.

FAQ

What does AEO stand for? Answer engine optimization: structuring your site so AI tools can find, understand, and cite it when answering someone’s question.

What does GEO stand for? Generative engine optimization: shaping how your business gets described once an AI does cite it.

Do I need to redo my whole website for this? No. Clear language, real FAQ content, and consistent information across platforms cover most of it.

Is this different from regular SEO? It builds on it. Good SEO habits (clarity, structure, real content) are most of what AEO and GEO need too.

If keeping up with this feels like one more thing on a list that’s already too long, that’s exactly what I fold into the Flourishing retainer tier. It’s not a separate service. It’s part of the same ongoing systems work I already do for retainer clients, just extended to cover how AI tools see and describe your business.
